few days ago I received the news of the new release of UB News , coordinated by a digital number Tony Manzi with articles by Simone Monetti, Lelio Bottero and Marco Tripisciano . Good news for some time because I felt that it was a little Unionbirrai 'the pole nell'effervescente world of Italian artisan beer. Certainly the commitment on this duty, the Beer of the Year competition, the courses: in fact it would be wrong to speak of stagnation, rather than poor communication and, perhaps, little involvement of the specialized press. Now, UB News could be a first step out of the cocoon. At least I hope it very much. Because, as I honestly did not even refer to Unionbirrai very recently, the association of Italian craft beer has definitely need. An association of producers, however: capable making common cause, to express public positions, perhaps to develop a purchasing group and, of course, lessons and competitions. However, the current period do not know how much we're smiling at Unionbirrai: on the one hand born in fact, regional consortia, as reported by the always updated Beer Chronicles , the other is that of organizing a meeting in Bicester between producers (as if they have discussed in the forum Mobi , I consider it a news story in the public domain), and the same Unionbirrai convene an extraordinary meeting of shareholders with "proposed amendments to the bylaws" on the agenda (one case?).
Ergo, there must be some problem under. If the gap between consumers and producers I've never seemed a drama, the producers are in my opinion in mid-stream. Someone has seen fit to join Assobirra, someone makes local consortia and others will convene a meeting ... And Unionbirrai? Let me be clear, I do not root for anyone. Will talk with anyone you find interesting, representative and possibly available, but some have two producer groups, plus local, perhaps a bit 'too much for a market like the Italian, since that seems to be the Disneyland of beer abroad (in the sense of exciting, surprising and a bit 'crazy) and that instead, as seen from inside, looks a bit', at least from my point of view, a boy who grew up too fast in the throes of crisis lead to hormonal and fast hands. A sort of cross between Boum and The Paul Street Boys (Paal, or if you prefer). A market, and I speak only of what craft beer, where there are superstars and the "but I would like (for now) I can not", the pure and hard (but also in a bit envious) and the perpetually angry because no one considers them to be (but then maybe you do not miss respond to an e-mail), those lovers of beer, but also drink it with friends, and those who hope in the business of the century. I do not know if Unionbirrai will survive or if an imaginary new association will be born on the ashes, or if, again, we two producer groups. But I think it's time that each individual producer, as I said in the sense of each individual on his own, do a bell'esame of consciousness. Reflects not so much on what style of beer to be produced, I know that here there are problems, but wants to place on how and where the market wants to conquer the world or to supply his province? He wants to be in the restaurant or pub? He wants to have a beer "the people" or a beer sommelier? Limited production require radical decisions. It is said that a choice is better than the other. Just different. Once you have clarified your ideas, you might also be easier to decide what, if any association to keep alive, what do expect from that association and, of course, what is offered in return.
